1
Designing Your Pool
Find something you already like or come up with your own unique design for your pool project. You can gather inspiration from magazines or books dedicated to pool design. Imagine it, draw it, budget it and get permits and equipment.
2
Laying Out Your Pool
No doubt the easiest step in the process! After all the work put in to designing the pool, now is the time to see it in full scale by painting your pool design on the ground. Once painted, take it all in. Make any final changes you to your design.
3
Excavating or Digging
Digging out your pool is no small task! Allow a day or two depending on how complicated your pool design is. After excavating your pool, you'll be able to see the final depth, steps, edges, water features and everything else.
4
Plumbing Your Pool
It's time to install plumbing in your pool. This includes the installation of pool filtration, cleaning systems, chlorination, heating, spa jets, drains and returns. Be sure to double check all your connections and seals to prevent any future leaks.
5
Wiring Your Pool
Unless you want to swim in the dark, electrical wiring your pool is an important step. Pool lighting, the equipment area and a working plumbing system are some of the things that will need to be electrically wired in your pool.
6
Rebar and Steel
Rebar, or reinforced steel poles, are a vital structural element of a pool. They are used to support the concrete, which would move and break if set against soil alone. This sets up the frame for the shotcrete to be laid.
7
Shotcreting Your Pool
During this step, the pool floor and wall are covered in 8 inch thick shotcrete. Shotcrete sounds complicated, but it's just concrete forced through a hose and nozzle at high speeds. It can be "shot" on vertical walls or non-structural areas.
8
Tiling Your Pool
3 inches above and 3 inches below the water line is where the tiling will go. Not only does it act as an accent to your overall pool design, it saves you cost on maintenance. Tiling your pool protect your pool from discoloration from chemicals.
9
Interior Finishing
From stone or tile, to plaster or pebbles, interior finishing your pool is the part of the process that seals your new pool water tight! This step will take one or two days depending on the finishing option you choose for your pool.
10
Adding Water Features
Your pool basics are done and you are ready to add waterfalls, fountains, swim-up bars and water slides. The possibilities for your backyard are endless! Be sure to plan ahead for any water features that will require excavating, plumbing or wiring.
11
Fill Up Your Pool
You did it! Now it's time to fill up your pool with water and enjoy your hard work! Once the pool is full of water, make sure to add the appropriate chemicals and check the levels of the chlorine and pH before diving in to your new DIY pool!
